Daniela led the team to their first European Championship victory in 1998 and was second to reigning World and European champion Svetlana Khorkina of Russia.

The 16 year old is the leading contender for the all-around title in Athens. Sofronie proved unflappable at the European Championships in Amsterdam, completing 10 routines -- four in the team event, four in the all-around and two event finals -- without falling from an apparatus.
