Even the dead carry a reward in Uttar Pradesh’s Allahabad or so it seems.

Police in the city declared an award of Rs 2500 on Pyarelal, a wanted criminal, long after he had left his earthly abode to meet his maker.

They also declared a reward of Rs 10,000 each on two other ‘criminals’ - Virendra Yadav and Priyanshu. But it was after Yadav had received a bail and Priyanshu - alias Nilesh of Taukalpur village in Pratapgarh - was given a clean chit for the crime he had committed.

Yadav, a resident of Kaimur district in Bihar, was wanted in a case registered at Georgetown police station.

Officials at Soraon police station declared the reward on Priyanshu, who was wanted in a case of dacoity, without checking the fact that the case was handed over to the crime branch crime investigation department (CB-CID), which had given a clean chit to him.

These facts have come to the fore after DIG Allahabad range Jitendra Kumar Shahi inquired about the criminals carrying rewards on their arrest.

“The incidents have been taken seriously. It is clear that the investigation officers have shown negligence in their duty and got the rewards declared on criminal while keeping the officials in the dark. Clarification has been demanded from the investigation officers in all three incidents,” Shahi said.

The officials completed all formalities required to declare a reward on a criminal’s head without carrying out raids to look for them and did not even bother to check if they were alive or dead.

The concerned policemen may now be penalised for their negligence in declaring the rewards without confirming the case situation of the three men.
