Talking about the issue, some colleges said, “India is a secular country and every citizen has the freedom to dress oneself. So the students should have the freedom to dress themselves.”

Ashok Kumar, principal of PPN degree College, said, “We do no think dress code is something very good, but the students should be sensible enough to wear decent clothes. This is a college and students come here to study. Thus, they should maintain the decorum of the college.”

Talking to HT about the dress code, SK Mishra Principal DBS College said, “Proper dress means discipline but I am not in favour of any dress code. Even if there happens to be a dress code, it should be for girls and boys. Actually, a student may be 18 years of age by the time he or she reaches college, but the truth is that they are not matured enough. Therefore, they should be asked to maintain decorum of the institute.”

Speaking about the dress code issue, Dr Abha Seth, lecturer, department of psychology, said,

“Dress code only for girls is totally unfair. If we talk about giving equal rights to both boys and girls, we should impose restriction on both sexes. But I would definitely say that girls should wear a decent dress while coming to college.

Their area of concern should be studies and not the dress.”

Some students also reacted to the dress code.

BA IIIrd year student of DG College Fauzia Shanam said, “I do not have any problem with the dress code because a student will always remain a student even if he or she reaches the college.”

A B.Com IInd year student, Garima Gupta, said, “These college authorities are mainly concerned with what the girls wear, but they least concerned about the attendance of the students. Besides, the teachers do not reach the class on time. Does the college authorities have any solution to these problems?”

Reacting to the remarks made by the students, teachers and college authorities, a student said, “The dress code controversy will continue without an end.

Besides, it will be difficult to impose any dress code on the college campus.”

Meeting: The district administration has called a meeting to discuss the issue of admission and holding student union elections in all the degree college affiliated to the Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Mahraj University (CSJMU). The meeting will be held at the collectrate hall at 5 pm tomorrow. A press communiqué issued by additional district magistrate (city) Abrar Ahmad stated that allthe principals of the degree colleges concerned should attend the meeting.
