Deepak Singh: From addiction to activism

I was in the IXth standard when, unknown to my family, I took my first shot of drugs. What started with chewing tobacco, smoking cigarettes and popping pills soon led to the real thing. At the behest of a friend I decided to try Heroin.
The first shot was bad. I vomited and vowed never to use it again. But in five months I was fully hooked. I had just entered the Xth standard.
Money was never a problem as I was the pampered kid of the family. They only learnt the truth during the Holi festival the following year. Eight friends had gathered for the revelries and we raucously smoked and drank through the day, and raced noisily around the city in a jeep. Eventually we were caught by the police and who searched us and found us in possession of Heroin.
We were detained for a few hours that night. The police did not charge us with any offence. They merely informed our families.
My entire family was devastated by the episode. I was locked up in a room for two weeks. But then they took pity and set me free.
