Delhi Government has begun a crackdown on illegal units manufacturing packaged drinking water in the national capital. Health Minister Kiran Walia said she has already issued orders to officials in her department to conduct raids at all the units manufacturing packaged drinking water without any approval from the government.

"The crackdown has begun." When asked about a Delhi High Court order directing government to crack down on such units, she said "it is a serious issue and government will strictly follow the order."

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, commenting on the issue, said the matter should be taken seriously by both Health Department of the government and the MCD.

Walia, resolving to close down such illegal units, also appealed to the citizens to be careful while buying packaged drinking water. "It is season of water-borne diseases. So citizens should also be careful while buying packaged water. We should examine whether the manufacturer is a licensed holder or not. It is written on the cover. We should also see whether the company has Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification," Walia said.
