?Distance education programmes are here to stay?

These sentiments were expressed by the renowned mathematician and former Vice-Chancellor of Allahabad University Prof T Pati at the inaugural session of the two-day national seminar on 'Dimensions of Distance Education' organised by Uttar Pradesh Rajarshi Tandon Open University (UPRTOU) on Tuesday.

According to Prof Pati, civilisation was not advancing since the culture was being ignored. To acquire knowledge self-abnegation was must which was not followed by the students at present time. Encouragement and recognition to the achievement would boost the moral of the new generation.

Speaking on the occasion, UPRTOU Vice-Chancellor Prof KNS Yadava said that it is the duty of a teacher to make a student independent by providing job oriented education.

Prof Yadav said that distance learning education has emerged as an alternate to the conventional system of education and gained popularity within a very short period.

Prof Yadav said that the distance education has become the need of the time. It has served as a significant media to propagate the Indian culture. The distance education is competent to meet the educational needs of people without any limitation of age. The distance education has made its presence felt in the rural areas. This indicates that the distance education system has advanced a step forward towards establishing itself as an alternate to the conventional system of education.

There has been a substantial increase in the working class opting for the distance education. This has leda to establishment of new open universities across the country and the central government is keen to establish an open university in every state.

Around 100 participants presented their research papers during the second session, which was presided over by Prof RS Pandey. Prof Pandey praised the research papers presented on the occasion and gave his remarks. Prof KK Bhutani conducted the third session.

Earlier, convenor of the seminar, Prof SP Gupta presented the introductory note while Dr HC Jaiswal conducted the proceedings. Prof T Pati was felicitated by Prof Yadav. Dr Ruchi Bajpai proposed vote of thanks. Those present on the occasion were Director of Higher Education Dr Baslas, UPRTOU registrar Dr Ratnakar Shukla, Dr RB Singh, Dr Arjun Tiwari, Prabhat Chandra Mishra and academicians from different universities of Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttaranchal and Bihar.
