In his article Signalling a wide (June 6), AG Noorani seems to have gone overboard in stating that the RSS floated the Jan Sangh in 1951. The RSS was founded by Shyama Prasad Mukherjee who had resigned from Pandit Nehru’s cabinet a year earlier on the question of Nehru’s mishandling of refugees coming from East Pakistan, now Bangladesh. Mukherjee sought assistance from the then RSS chief which the latter provided. Noorani, quoting Nehru to say that the BJP was an illegitimate child of the RSS, only shows his ignorance. Everybody knows that Nehru was prejudiced against the RSS.
