Ana Ivanovic produced another impressive performance to see off Alicia Molik 6-4, 6-0 and win the first point for Serbia despite suffering an injury scare in the second set when she appeared to overextend her left knee.
Earlier, seven-time Grand Slam winner Justine Henin downed Sesil Karatantcheva of Kazakhstan 6-4, 6-3 as Belgium swept their tie.
Wickmayer beats Safina at asb classic
Auckland: Defending champion Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium beat former top-ranked Dinara Safina of Russia 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-1 in a hard-fought first round match on Tuesday at the ASB Tennis Classic.
Wickmayer then won the final set in 33 minutes with service breaks in the second and sixth games as Safina faded, showing signs of her lack of recent match play.
Becker upsets Verdasco at Brisbane
Brisbane: Germany's Benjamin Becker upset third-seeded Fernando Verdasco 6-1, 6-7 (2), 6-3 on Tuesday in the first round of the Brisbane International, while fourth-seeded Mardy Fish advanced with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Adrian Mannarin of France in just over an hour.
"It's not every day you beat a top 10 player," Becker said after the match.
