Three bogies, next to the engine, went ahead but the remaining ones were derailed between Rangapani and Nijbari stations at 10:55 pm, they said.

While seven bogies touched the ground after derailment, seven others skidded off the tracks but did not fall, they said. The cause of the derailment was not known.

A senior spokesman of NFR, headquarters said a railway medical van treated 20 passengers after rescuing them and referred two of them to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital, four km away, as their condition was serious.

He said the rescuers helped the trapped passengers, including women and children, to come out of the derailed bogies.

A search was carried on with powerful lights to see if any injured was still inside in any bogie, he said, confirming there was no loss of life.
