PROMINENT ghee trader Khemchand and his wife Basant were found murdered in their house in Raniganj under Kakadev police circle on Monday night. The double murder that sent shockwaves across the city took place after new police chief Alok Kumar Singh took over charge.

The couple was hit on the head before being strangled to death.

The criminals ransacked their house. The almirahs and vaults were found open.

The scene of the crime suggested that the miscreants had escaped with huge cash and valuables. However, the police have ruled out robbery motive behind the murder. They said it might be the handiwork of someone very close to the family.

The incident came to light when the maid of the house reached the residence of Khemchand. She found the doors of the house ajar and the couple lying in a pool of blood in the bedroom.

The maid immediately raised an alarm and informed the police. Getting information, DIG Diljeet Singh, the new SSP and other senior officials rushed to the spot.

The police also called finger print experts and sniffer dogs as the miscreants had left no clue. Some persons, including seven students living there as tenants, have been detained for interrogation.

Khemchand was among the top billionaires of the city. Although the couple had no issue, they had adopted a girl, who married one Sachin Srivastava of Kanpur. The police are investigating all aspects of the case.

Criminals arrested

THE SPECIAL Operation Group (SOG) and the city police on Monday arrested five criminals involved in several road hold-ups. Besides, the criminals murdered a truck driver and a cleaner two months ago.

The police also recovered the looted goods worth Rs 10 lakh from the criminals.
After murdering the truck driver and the cleaner near Derapur, they escaped with the items loaded in the truck, the police said.

The truck, which was on its way to Kanpur, was loaded with tea and electronic goods worth Rs 20 lakh.

They threw the bodies of the driver and the cleaner into the Sengur river and managed to sell half of the looted goods, the police added.

However, when they were trying to sell the rest of the booty, the SOG and the Naubasta police arrested the robbers.

Addressing a press conference, newly appointed SSP Alok Singh, said the kingpin of the gang was a former PAC constable whose services were terminated. He was still at large, the SSP said.
