Women students at the Dyal Singh College can now breathe easy with the University Grants Commission (UGC) handing the college Rs 25 lakh to build a hostel for women.

The ambitious project will be expanded over a period of time with more rooms being added. “Initially, we will be housing 30 to 35 girls in ten rooms,” said D Jagannathan, principal of the college. “Over the years the number of women students taking admission to the college has gone up.

Of these, a majority are outstation students with a sizeable number from the Northeast.

Since the college is located outside the main campus, most find it difficult to commute back and forth from various corners of the city.” The hostel will also have added facilities like a recreational room, a tea and coffee vending machine. Special emphasis will be given to organic food.

“Students tend to prefer junk food. We will be introducing the concept of organic food within the college premises so that they have a healthy option,” he added. Meanwhile, the college’s unisex gym is ready for use.

It took months of research and visit to various gyms across the Capital by college authorities to design one of their own. The air-conditioned gym will provide facilities like treadmill, weights and cycling.

“Students will be paying a fee of Rs 100 per month and will have special trainers to help them build a good physique,” added Jagannathan. The other changes on anvil include an activity block which is to be completed by the end of next month.
