Talking to HT he said that Anna University Tamil Nadu and Thiagrajar College of Engineering Madurai had become the beneficiaries of the programme in India. But in the absence of awareness no more colleges or the universities could opt for the programme. He said that the programme had begun in the year 2001 for a period of five years. The project was to expire in December 2006. “We are trying to create awareness about the programme among the educational community so that they could reap the benefits of the programme,” he added.

Shanker further said that the objectives were to raise the number of member-institutions so that the students at all these institutions could carry out their research works through the virtual laboratory as it was not possible for every institution to create sophisticated laboratories for researches in the robotics and to equip them with the latest testing, manufacturing and developing systems.

But the research scholars could be given effective and perfect training in tele-robotics through the virtual laboratories at a minimum expenditure and they could be trained in using the sophisticated equipment needed for robot making.

Shanker said that at the University of Wuerzburg research scholars had developed a rescue robot which could help in fire fighting with utmost success.

They have asked for license from the Government for putting it in use at times of need. The technique of the robot could be well learnt through the virtual laboratory and the scholars but they could not learn at different institutions.

Shanker said that the bureaucratic indolence in this country hampered the growth of the most useful programme of the IVLM and forced many of the institutions and universities to remain deprived of taking advantage of the programme.
