Education should be project-oriented
SUBJECTIVE EDUCATION at every level has been the root cause of stress, depression and suicidal tendencies among the students. This type of education can neither help them to build self- confidence nor to face the global challenges.
SUBJECTIVE EDUCATION at every level has been the root cause of stress, depression and suicidal tendencies among the students. This type of education can neither help them to build self- confidence nor to face the global challenges.
Several senior professors of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-K) told HT that unless a ‘project oriented’ education was introduced the menace of depression would not spare the up coming students and the young citizens of the country.

A senior geo-scientist at the IIT-K Dr RP Singh said it was unfortunate that our education system patronised the ‘mugging up’ theory even at the higher level.
Existing teaching pattern and the educational curriculum did not relax the students. Rather it makes them tense. He said that blackboard teaching has become obsolete all over the world but in this country it was still being pursued even at higher level. There was a need to overhaul the whole educational system if the country wanted to see youths coming up with new dreams and projection of quality life.
According to Dr Rajiv Sinha the high expectations of parents often put the students under stress and forced them to take unpleasant decisions. Besides, he said, the students at the level of professional courses find themselves incapable to cope up with the course due to their poor educational background.
He suggested that the education be made more creative and students should be discouraged studying through notes. Better counseling could help the students Dr Sinha added.
Dr Binayak Rath who has been one of the directors of the Board of Governors and at present is the member of the Academic Senate of MNIT Allahabad said that students needed to be groomed in a right direction at professional institutes. They were never given any training for developing self-confidence except certain ‘sermons’ on this important issue.
Several other professors said that in fact some of the students become reluctant towards their studies for various reasons and when they find themselves hapless at the examinations, they take up unusual steps. They said students themselves were responsible for stress and depression.
Other professors said that there was nothing new about the grading system at the Institute. The universal pattern of grading was being followed. Case of each student was treated on humanitarian grounds without any ill feeling. But for maintaining certain standards some tough rules had to be followed.
Professors suggested that counseling cell at the institute needed to be strengthened. The cell should have a personal touch. Almost all the professors were of the view that the student-faculty relationship was quite healthy at the institute.
