Kumar, who oversaw the situation in Muzaffarnagar after the recent communal riots, embarrassed the government last week when he went on leave citing political interference. He resumed office on Monday saying he had taken leave for a religious visit.

Sources said he had moved an application seeking permission from the state government to go on central deputation. A home department spokesman said ADG (GRP), Mukul Goel, would take over from Kumar, who has been attached to the DGP headquarters in Lucknow.

A 1987 batch IPS officer, Goel served on significant posts during the previous (2003-07) Samajwadi Party regime.
