AN OFFICIAL of the accounts department of the Kanpur Municipal Corporation Dinesh Kumar Verma was manhandled and thrashed allegedly by the employees’ and their union leader here today.

Reacting promptly, the municipal commissioner Arvind Singh suspended the accused employee leader and directed the officials to lodge an FIR against him. Singh also ordered an inquiry into the matter. The deputy municipal commissioner Khurshid Ahmed Faridi would conduct the inquiry.
According to KMC sources, employees were also planning to lodge a counter FIR in the matter.
Earlier, according to KMC officials about a dozen employees led by Sanyukt Karamchari Sangh general secretary Baburam Baghmar dashed towards the residence of the chief account officer (CAO) PN Singh after they received an information that cheques and accounts were being cleared from his residence itself.
Smelling rat, the employees reached the residence of the CAO where the account department clerk Dinesh Kumar Verma was also present. The enraged employees indulged in heated exchange of words with both the officials.
However, the matter turned worse when the employees thrashed Verma and allegedly made him captive at the KMC building.
However, Baghmar, when contacted on phone, said the allegations levelled against him were baseless. He said it was PN Singh and his close confidantes who had actually threatened him of dire consequences if he did not mend his ways.
Elaborating, Baghmar said that he and the Sangh president Mohan Singh Yadav were sitting at the employees’ union office, when PN Singh’s messengers asked him to accompany them to Singh’s place.
The two also told Baghmar not to create a fuss over the issue of misappropriation of Rs 7.5 crore funds. They asked him not to take up the issue to the district magistrate Deepak Kumar.
Baghmar said after he refused to accompany them, he was threatened of dire consequences. He said that the union has decided to file a complaint at the Swaroop Nagar police station against PN Singh for giving him death threat.
Talking to Hindustan Times on phone Municipal Commissioner Arvind Singh admitted that Baghmar had been suspended and officials have been directed to lodge an FIR against the accused employee leader. He said action would also be taken against those whose names would surface during the course of inquiry.
The demonstration by the employees from April 4 might intensify following the action against the union general secretary.
