Apropos of Jatin Gandhi’s report Railways pull the chain on disabled (April 7), any government agency that wishes to make changes in its policy must give specific reasons for such action. The Railway Board may add clauses to ensure that the benefit should only go to handicapped people. Physically handicapped people have fewer job opportunities and depriving them of their means of livelihood could push them over the edge.

The defeat of the Congress in the MCD elections has been attributed to rising prices and the sealing drive in the Capital, but where the Congress went wrong was in not making sincere attempts to prove its bona fides to the people. Now the UPA government and the Delhi government must accept the blame. It should take concrete steps to contain inflation. If the Congress continues with its infighting and ignores ground realities, it will face disaster in the next assembly and Lok Sabha polls.
Shape up or ship out
The last few elections show that the BJP is on the upswing. People look for performance. Come next election, they will elect the Opposition to power in the hope that it will deliver on its promises. The BJP has done well in the recent elections but this need not make it jubilant. Its victories can be attributed to the Congress’ failure to deliver. The Congress must set its house in order and provide good governance if it wants to remain in the reckoning.
The Congress lost the MCD election due to anti-incumbency, rejection of new Master Plan and the sealing drive. Also there were serious differences among the party leaders which cost the Congress dearly. The high command must take steps to control internal feuds.
