Hey Delhi girls, are you fretting about what to wear to college next week? Forget about designers and take some tips from your Mumbai counterparts.
The most popular name in their closet today is Mickey Mouse. College girls and office-going fashionistas have stocked up on cute tees with Mickey Mouse designs — and they are loving it. “Everyone is wearing these T-shirts,” says Helen, a French-expat living in Mumbai, who owns a Minnie Mouse tee.
“Even in France, cartoons have suddenly become very popular. I think it’s because we’ve grown up with these characters that they are so dear to us.” Imran, a shopkeeper in one of Mumbai’s upmarket suburbs confirms the trend. “All the college girls want to buy Mickey Mouse T-shirts. Until two weeks ago, it was Sponge Bob who was everybody’s favourite. I sold two dozen T-shirts in a week.” It’s not just the girls, guys too dig the cartoon look.
“Bart Simpson is the most popular character amongst guys,” admits a store owner. “We also sell a lot of boxer shorts with cartoons like Family Guy.” Get your own tee If this back-to-innocence fashion caught your fancy, check out thrift shopping destinations across the city for your fix.
Markets like Janpath and Sarojini Nagar stock tees with Mickey Mouse as well as most other cartoon characters. 25-year-old Kanchan Sharma, who buys her tees from these places, advises: “You have to haggle, but they cost about Rs 200. Be careful about the print though, sometimes it washes off.”
