Indian coach Greg Chappell on Tuesday said that the team for the firstTest will be selected strictly on merit, and teamrequirement.

Greg Chappell told a private channel thatthere will be no automatic return for former Indian captain Ganguly, "who has done well of late".

"Whether he has been captain before or not does not matter and in the end of the day we have to pick the best team," said the India coach.

Chappell was categorical that emotions will not be an issue while picking the team.

Madan Lal, former Test Cricketer, said Greg's comments were indicative of the fact the Ganguly may have to sit on the bench.

The first Test begins in Lahore on Friday.
