Experts dwell on relevance of Ashoka?s policy

He was delivering the valedictory lecture of a special course on Mauryan Inscriptions at Jnana-Pravaha, Centre for Cultural Studies and Research, here at Samne Ghat area here on Monday.

Prof Thaplyal, who is a noted scholar of Brahmi and Kharoshti script, explained the contents of the 12th Rock Edict of Ashoka and said “The term which we find in the epigraph is ‘Saravadhi’ (Sara-Vriddhi), which is to be developed by all collectively and the phrase for this is ‘samavaya eva sadhu’.

“This is more important than charity and service to the living beings. The emperor created a new post of `Stree-Adhyaksha’, with the aim to disseminate the essence of religion among women, which Ashoka considered to be equally important”, he added.

Presiding over the session, renowned epigraphist and scholar, Prof TP Verma explained the relevance of the contents of the inscriptions of Ashoka in the present day context. Prof Verma also distributed certificates to 47 participants representing various universities, colleges and institutions of the city. Joint director of Jnana-Pravaha, Prof Kamal Giri proposed a formal vote of thanks.

Book release: Jnana-Pravaha, Centre for Cultural Studies and Research would organise a ‘Samarpan Samaroh’ of the book Indian Art Treasures by Dr Kapila Vatsyayan at Samne Ghat area here on September 6.  

Managing trustee of the Centre, Bimla Poddar, said that senior BJP leader and former Indian ambassador to Britan Dr LM Singhvi would be the chief guest at the function whereas noted Congress leader and former Sadar-e- Riyasat of Jammu and Kashmir, Dr Karan Singh, would be the guest of honour on the occasion.
Besides, Dr TK Biswas would deliver a a special lecture on ‘Time and Space in Indian Art’ on the occasion. MGKV V-C Prof SS Kushwaha, would be the guest-in-chief whereas Prof Anand Krishna will preside over the function.
