I’d have made a great traveller, but I don’t have a choice. Being an actor, I only get to see places thanks to a film director, unless I’m on vacation. I went to Kuala Lumpur twice in the past one year: once, when I was shooting for Ram Gopal Varma’s Company, and then for David Dhawan’s Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin.

You can’t miss the Petronas Twin Towers, the 88-storey Kuala Lumpur landmark made of steel, which make your head reel whichever way you see it. We shot a couple of songs near the Towers for Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin. I went to the Bird Park where I spotted flamingos, crowned pigeons and peacocks: I’ve never been to too many bird parks, so it was a novel experience for me. The Dayabumi Complex, a 35-storey skyscraper with its high-vaulted arches, is another architectural wonder: it’s a perfect blend of Islamic and modern designs. The National Monument surrounded by colourful fountains and pewter lilies is absolute eye candy.

Kuala Lumpur’s biggest plus is that it has a great night life. At Plaza Berjaya on Jalan Imbi, check out Manhattan, which is a cafe during the day and a lounge bar in the evening – it’s a must for beer lovers. At Istana Hotel on Jalan Raja Chulan, there’s a rocking disc and karaoke bar. Another place where you can get a slice of night life is the Indian Vince Bistro & Disc at Wisma Inai, off Jalan Tun Razak. If you have more time, try to catch a play at the Actors’ Studio Theatre, where the tickets are reasonably priced at 20 ringgit and the performances are of a very high standard.

Like many other cities, Kuala Lumpur also has a China Town that throbs with activity till late in the night. You have an Indian temple (Maha Mariamman) right at the heart of China Town, besides two notable Chinese temples: See Yeoh and Chan See Shu Yuen. I know people say that KL is a concrete jungle compared to the idyllic Langkawi and Genting, but you need to explore the city a bit before you discover how fascinating it really is.
