This work is being displayed for the first time at Gandhi Shilp Bazar at Allahabad Haat which will conclude on March 10.

The choosy lots who fancy a traditional flavour, for interior decoration prefer the popular work of wood inlay. This work is being displayed for the first time at Gandhi Shilp Bazar at Allahabad Haat which will conclude on March 10.
"It involves a lot of hard work", said R Kandam, the craftsman from Bangalore.
Definitely for every particular shade the wood of different colour and variety is used.
"First we have to trace the entire design on a wooden frame.
The inner portion is then removed by finely cutting along the outline of the design.
Afterwards, the same space is filled with pieces of various shades of wood as required. It is like solving a puzzle", he said.
Finishing and polishing the entire frame is required afterwards and that too involves a lot of labour as the entire work is manual. The finished product is exquisite. "For the colour white, elephant tusks were used earlier but after the ban, we have started using acrylic sheet", added Kandam. The artiste gives shapes to charming scenes and portraits involving human figures and animals.
R Kandam has already received state award certificate from Karnataka State Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd, Bangalore for his talent.
Right from the centre table and stools, there are other decorative pieces too which are framed and could be used as a decorative item. However, most of the pieces were highly priced which attracted few takers for the exclusive item.
"It is meant for those who are well aware of its significance", he said. Kandam has been to the metros and various states across the country to participate in exhibitions. "
The popularity of the item is globally acknowledged as wood inlay work is also being exported in large numbers", said the crafstman.
