The farmers and Apna Dal activists were of the view that they would not allow the State government to acquire their fertile land for the development of the proposed hi-tech city here.

“Since our livelihood is completely dependent on the cultivation of vegetables, crops and flowers, we will not allow anyone to acquire these fertile land,” they said.

Samajwadi Paty-led State government should cancel the establishment of proposed hi-tech city, they added.

State Incharge of Apna Dal, Athar Jamal Lari, who led the demonstration, said that SP-led government was working in the interest of capitalists and seemed determined to wipe out the farmers.

“It is the anti-farmer government which is giving priority to the capitalists,” he said and warned that if the State government did not cancel the establishment of the proposed hi-tech city in Varanasi, local farmers and Apna Dal activists would intensify their agitation.

“Why State government is using fertile agricultural land for the construction of hi-tech city over fertile land?,” the farmers said and added that hi-tech city could be established on infertile land.

Earlier, the farmers, belonging to those villages which will be affected due to establishment of the hi-tech city and activists of Apna Dal tried to enter into commissioner’s office but the security personnel deployed there closed the main gate. Mild lathicharge controlled the situation.
