Farmers stage blockade to save agricultural land
A LARGE number of farmers, along with village women, staged ‘chakka jam’ on the Varanasi-Bhadohi route at Karuata market in Varanasi on Wednesday to register their protest against the proposed hi-tech city between Roahania and Mohansarai on a 2,200-acre agricultural land. The project, they said, was a threat to their livelihood.
Farmers, under the banner of the ‘Khet Bachao Kisan Sangharsh Samiti’, staged a dharna on the road leaving vehicular traffic stranded for over six hours despite the rain today. Activists of the samiti were demanding withdrawal of the establishment of the proposed hi-tech city.
Coordinator of the samiti Heera Lal said they were contemplating to launch two massive agitation programmes, one outside the office of the Divisional Commissioner for an indefinite period and another outside the Vidhan Sabha in Lucknow during the assembly session, in case the State Government did not consider their demands.
Heera Lal said a series of meetings would be organised at the villages affected before finalising the date of agitation.
He said he got information that the VDA had already submitted a proposal for acquisition of land for the proposed hi-tech city.
“Our demand from the State Government is to cancel the proposal and withdraw the project for the proposed hi-tech city”, he said.
The farmers were of the view that they would not allow the State Government to acquire their land at any cost as their livelihood depended completely on agriculture.
Later, according to Yadav, SDM (first) visited them and was handed over the memorandum. The State Government had already approved the project of Unitech for establishment of hi-tech city in Varanasi.
