World number one Federer, the reigning Wimbledon and Australian Open champion, could become the first man since Sweden's Mats Wilander in 1988 to capture three Slam crowns in a single year.
The Swiss star will also try to become the first player to win the first four Grand Slam finals he has played.
"There is a lot on the line for me," Federer said. "I hope I can cope with all these things plus a tough opponent."
Federer will have to get past 2001 US Open champion Hewitt, who is playing some of the best tennis of his career and riding a 16 match-win streak.
