“The male and female ratio is declining in several states which should be checked by creating awareness about the rights of a child,” he said adding the media could play a vital role in spreading awareness about a child’s rights in society.

Speaking as chief guest during a workshop on ‘Child rights and role of media’ at MGKV on Monday, Prof Singh stressed a discrimination-free society where male and female children could avail equal rights.

The workshop was conducted under the joint auspices of Journalism and Mass Communication Department of MGKV and a non-government organisation, Human Welfare Association.“Since the kids are any country’s assets, gender discrimination should be stopped and instead, breast feeding promoted for better nourishment of kids,” he said. He exhorted male students to opt for dowry-less marriages and make efforts to weed out such social evils.

Singh said the media along with NGOs should come forward and identify places of child right violation and efforts should be made in this direction jointly.

Presiding over the workshop, Head, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at MGKV, Dr Anil Upadhyay said government machinery should ensure stern action against violators of child rights in which media could play a vital role. Dr Upadhyaya stressed the need for launching a mass movement and awareness campaign to protect the rights of children in society. Dr Rajnikant of Human Welfare Association and Raghvendra Mishra conducted the workshop.

Other participants included Dr Rachana Agrawal, Dr Ramprakash Dwivedi, Dr Arun Sharma, Dr Vinod Singh, Dr Durgesh Tripathi, Premnath Chaubey and Pushpendra Pandey.
