In the first incident at Khilari, 45 km from Ranchi, Bharat Tana Bhagat axed to death his 35-year-old wife and their sons aged 10 and six months on Saturday while they were asleep. A husband-wife fuel reportedly led to the tragedy.
After the murders, Bhagat went to a river and cleaned the axe. He was arrested after villagers informed the police.
In the second incident in Ranchi, Aftab, 35, slit his wife's throat with a razor and later hanged himself. Aftab's relatives told the police that he was unemployed and had been looking for a job.
The couple, who have two sons and a daughter, reportedly fought regularly.
