Fire broke down in historical Mubarak Mandi complex

Toshakhana complex also known as Maharani Charaki Palace is the only safe building in the entire complex, reports Deepak Khajuria.

A major fire broke out in Toshakhana Complex in historical Mubarak Mandi Palace of Jammu on Friday afternoon. However, there was no loss of life or precious historical belongings, concerned officials said.

The Toshakhana complex also known as Maharani Charaki Palace was the only safe building in the entire historic Mubarak Mandi complex, which was completely sealed and was under the care of Hospitality and Protocol department of Jammu and Kashmir.

Talking to Hindustan Times, Toshakhana Store's Tehvildar (care taker),Chuni Lal Koul said that he was the one who informed Police Control Room and Fire Brigade about the fire.

He said, "The historical wall paintings, window frames, wooden ceilings, walnut ceilings and other antique and precious jewellery of Maharajas' period are stored in the store."

"Luckily with the immediate action of fire brigade all the objects are safe," he added.

When contacted, SP City North Sanjay Kotwal who was present on the spot till late evening said, "There is no causality but one fire fighter was hurt putting off the flames. He was shifted to the hospital."

Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Parmod Jain who visited the spot said that the inquiry was not yet ordered. "Firstly we have to save the complex from fire," he said.

Director Fire and Emergency Services GA Bhat who also rushed to the spot said, "We timely controlled the fire but the reason of the incident are yet not known."

The mysterious took 14 fire brigade vehicles and police more than four hours to extinguish it.
