The children were born in 24th week and each weighed between 500-550 gm as against the normal weight of infants at birth at 2.5 to 3 kg. The lungs of the children are not fully developed leading to complications. It might turn out to be multiple tragedy for the parents in the sense that their first daughter, born three years ago after five years of marriage, also passed away last year.
Dr Khan told Hindustan Times that the woman had some primary infertility problem and was undergoing treatment with her. When her first daughter passed away the lady again sought medical intervention and conceived naturally about six months ago.
During the sonography test conducted last month, the doctor was shocked to see multiple pregnancy and counted four foetuses. “We started taking extra care of her and were very worried about the childbirth,” Dr Khan said. This morning, the mother presented herself to Dr Khan with severe pains and checkup revealed totally dilated cervix that is basic sign of readiness for childbirth.
Two of the children were born normally but caesarian section had to be done for the other three. The low birth weight as well as underdeveloped organs gave indications to the doctors of the poor chance of their survival.
