The police have arrested three of the accused and are on the lookout for the other two who assaulted the child on Saturday evening.

The accused, around 20-21 years old, are reported to be students of a government school for the hearing and speech impaired in Rewa town, about 535 km northeast of state capital Bhopal.

The police named the arrested accused as Shashikant Tiwari of Churhat in Sidhi district, Rambharose Kori of Janeh in Rewa district and Krishna Kumar of Shahdol district.

The two accused on the run are Lucky Namdeo and Ashish Raidar.

The accused lived in a rented room and the child lived in the same locality, the police said.

The child was playing with her four-year-old sister outside her house when the accused allegedly took her to a secluded place and assaulted her. Her elder sister informed their parents, who rounded up the five with the help of locals and had an altercation.

Ashutosh Pandey, city superintendent of police, said following the altercation, the five youngsters reached Kotwali police station and lodged a complaint that they were beaten up by local residents.

“During investigation, it was found that the accused had tried to rape the child. But their act fell under the category of rape. Hence, a case was registered under section 376 of the Indian Penal Code,” he said.
