Birbhum Superintendent of Police Lakshmi Narain Meena said guns and bombs were used in the clash.

The situation is now under control, though tension prevails, he said.

Trinamool Congress secretary Anupbrata Mondal claimed that the five dead were party supporters.

He said the village was a Trinamool Congress stronghold, which was attacked by the CPI-M to wrest control.

Papuri village is adjacent to Suchpur, where 11 people were massacred in 2000. The TC had then claimed that the victims were its supporters.
