Flood scene grim in Assam

The flood situation in Assam remained grim today with more than four lakh people affected as the army carried out rescue operation in Nalbari district.

The flood situation in Assam remained grim today with more than four lakh people affected as the army carried out rescue operation in Nalbari district.

According to official reports, the situation in the worst-hit Dhemaji district in upper Assam and Hailakandi and Karimganj districts in South Assam remained grave as vast areas remained under water with the rivers in spate.

In Dhemaji district, road and rail communication in various areas, including national highway number 52, remained affected as flood water of Jiadhol river inundating them.

In Karimganj and Hailakandi districts, Kushiara, Singla and Longai rivers were flowing above the danger mark and inundated vast low-lying areas.

In the three districts a population of nearly three lakh have been affected.

Army completed rescue work in 40 villages of Nagrijuli area in Nalbari district after the Motonga and Kala rivers washed them away in flash flood yesterday.

Today the swirling water of river Pagladiya washed away an embankment of Kothalkhopa village inundating vast areas while the Borbhog and Hajo circle remained affected.

Road communication on the Hajo-Nalbari road between Bijulighat and Kalitakuchi was affected with a total of about one lakh people from nearly 80 villages in the district.
