CALL IT a trend reversal or just personal choice, but a lot of IIM Ahmedabad students have started shunning overseas job offers — leaving the domestic corporate players smiling.
During this year's campus placement process at the IIM-A, 18 graduating students refused offers from abroad and instead opted for jobs in the country. Last year, 16 students had refused job offers abroad.
The weeklong placement process concluded on Sunday evening -- one day earlier than scheduled -- after all the 235 available students were successfully placed. Of the 241 students, six had already opted out of the placement process as they wanted to start on their own.
With 510 jobs on offer for only 235 students, the students had multiple choices (with 30 new recruiters this year). Of the 90 overseas job offers, 72 were accepted.
Though still in a minority, the number of those who refused the foreign assignments may signal the plugging of brain drain. The domestic corporate players helped in it by raising the salary package. The highest domestic salary this year was Rs 34 lakh per annum (but still way behind the highest overseas salary $185,000 — about Rs 83 lakh).
The average overseas salary bagged by the students this year is $92,000, a 16 per cent rise from last year's average overseas package. The average domestic salary too has risen to Rs 9.75 lakh a year (Last year's average: Rs 7.90 lakh).
IIM-A director Prof Bakul Dholakia said on Monday that expectations have crossed in parameters like salaries and job profiles. The placements indicate that the acceptability of IIM-A graduates among the global corporate community is growing, he said.
