They have been frequenting the institute for exchanging the technical knowledge. A three-member delegation from Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), Republic of Korea, visited the IIT-K here on Wednesday.

Though they said that they were keen to exchange technical education programme, no final decision could be taken in this regard at the preliminary meeting.

The delegation members, including Chung Young Joo, Wang se Myung and Mahalik Nitaigour Premchand, held meetings with the director of the Institute Dr Sanjay G Dhande and other faculty members.

They had also addressed the students and told them about the research and technical education facilities available in the technical institutes of Korea.

They told the students that the technical universities in Korea had enough funds to give scholarships to the students who wanted to do higher studies and research work there.

They said that the medium of teaching in Korea was English and the students from any country would not find any language problem. They further said that there were ample opportunities for graduate and post-graduate-level studies.

Besides, the country offered a lot of opportunities to those who wanted to study information and communication technoloty, material science, engineering, environmental science, mechatronics and life sciences, they added.

They said that the university provided one-way economy class air fare to the students who joint Gwangju University, free dormitory, a monthly stipend of $ 330 and additional research assistantship and government scholarships up to $14,000 per annum.

During their meeting with the IIT-K officials, the delegates said that they had two purposes: Firstly, to ensure student and faculty exchange programme and secondly, to promote student interaction.

Assistant registrar of the IIT-K Mohammad Shakeel told HT that it was a very formal visit of the Korean professors. They discussed several issues of common interests, interacted with the students and visited the laboratories. They were highly impressed by the educational infrastructure available here. However, the question of collaboration would be discussed in the next meetings.

Earlier, a delegation of vice-presidents of nine technological universities of Germany visited the IIT-K to hold talks on collaboration between the seven IITs and the German Universities.

A ‘Frontiers of Engineering Programme (FE)’ between India and Germany was proposed to be held and the inter-disciplinary areas for the FE programme were identified. The areas identified included radio frequency identification technology, VLSI technology, modeling and simulation of process technology in MEMS and large scale wind tunnel testing .

It was also proposed to constitute Indo-German Joint Research council to organise seminars and workshops in both the countries.
