The championship will feature single seat cars powered entirely by electric motors. The FIA plans to hold the championship rounds in urban centers on street circuits rather than purpose built tracks in order to get maximum visibility for the new championship.

The FIA is hoping to attract both established as well as relatively new car manufacturers to the championship to design the chassis as well as the entirely electric drivetrain that will power the cars.

An all electric championship isn't entirely new as the FIA's two wheel counterpart, the International Motorcycle Federation (FIM) has been holding the ePower championship since 2010.

The bikes have slowly been catching up to their petrol counterparts, while hardly making a peep on the racetrack.
