The traumatised first semester student was rescued by locals of Sakhipara on Sunday morning in a semi-nude condition. She was allegedly abducted on Saturday while on a visit to Sambalpur, and brutally raped for several hours that night.

Sambalpur SP Sanjay Kumar said he would personally supervise the case. The accused would be forwarded to court after medical examination. He said that though the girl was out of danger now, she was yet to recover fully. Hence, the identification parade of the accused would take place after she recovers fully.

The girl is now in the ICU of VSS Medical College, Burla.

“I’ll also request the district judge to hold the trial in the fast track court. We’ll prepare the chargesheet soon,” Kumar said. DNA tests will be conducted if needed, he added.

All through the day, students across the state held demonstrations.
