Freshers saved from ragging

NEW ENTRANTS to the KG Medical University (KGMU) attended their classes amidst tight security on the campus here on Tuesday. However, this year two traditions ? taking Hippocratic oath by the students and address by the Vice-chancellor ? were not followed. Hippocratic oath is the promise made by doctors that they will obey the principles of the medical profession. VC Hari Gautam, who was out of station could not address the newcomers. NEW ENTRANTS to the KG Medical University (KGMU) attended their classes amidst tight security on the campus here on Tuesday.

However, this year two traditions — taking Hippocratic oath by the students and address by the Vice-chancellor — were not followed. Hippocratic oath is the promise made by doctors that they will obey the principles of the medical profession. VC Hari Gautam, who was out of station could not address the newcomers. However, he will address the students on August 11.

KGMU officials made elaborate security arrangements on the campus to ward off any incidents of ragging. Private security personnel were deployed to lead the students to other classes so that the seniors could not harass them. As these freshers moved out of their classes, the securitymen took them to the next class.

Since 9 am onwards the freshers, who started flocking to the KGMU, were first escorted to the anatomy class. From there, they were escorted to the physiology and biochemistry classes. Proctor VK Singh urged the students to remain disciplined and follow the code of conduct. At Brown Hall, all the students gave an undertaking that they be treated as temporary students until their documents are verified.

Meanwhile, paucity of bodies will be a big problem for the Anatomy department when the students will attend their practical classes from Wednesday.

Plan to stop unfair means
The committee that discussed the issue of discipline at its meeting on Tuesday fixed the punishment for students for their misconduct, especially during the examinations.

A member of the said that if a student was caught using unfair means and even if the content from which he was copying did not match with his answer sheet, the examination of the student concerned would be treated as cancelled.

Further, if the content matched with his answer sheet, the entire examination of that candidate would be cancelled, a member of the committee said.

“If a student threatens any teacher, employee or causes hurdle in the way of day to day working, he will be suspended for six months. If a student destroys the material pertaining to unfair means, he will face the same punishment,” he added.

If any student ran away with the answersheets or supplementary answer books, he would not be allowed to take the examinations, he said.

“An FIR will be lodged against a student if he carries firearms,” he said. In such cases, the student concerned would be suspended for six months and an inquiry would be set up against him, he added.
