“REKHA, KAISI ho tum,” trilled a clearly delighted Sabrina when a petite young woman draped in a sari stepped up to her at the pandal and offered her a gift-wrapped package. The object of the princess’ attention was Rekha Verma nee Keshware who, along with brothers Ashish and Akhilkesh, were Sabrina’s closest buddies during her growing up years.
“The princess is a very simple and loving lady who has kept in touch with her cultural moorings and can read, write and speak Hindi, Urdu and Marathi and even Sanskrit. She has kept in touch, regardless of where she’s been and used to send rakhis to my brothers even while she was in England,” revealed an emotional Rekha, who says she is delighted to see her friend tying the knot.
Lunch for old retainers
SIX HUNDRED residents, including weavers of the famed Maheshwar sarees, students of Ahilya Devi School, as well as old family retainers and childhood friends of the bride were served meals at a pandal erected outside the Fort after the puja. Princess Sanyogita Holkar along with father Richard and a few prominent citizens including former tourism minister Vijaylaxmi Sadho, lunched in an adjoining pandal.
The meal consisted of Masale Bhaat, chhola, aloo gobhi, peas, and methi, as well as plain puri with srikhand and gulab jamun being served for desert.
MAHARAJ GAJ Singh of Jodhpur, blue-blooded filmmaker Muzaffar Ali and son Shaad Ali, Tiger Top resort owners Jim and Tia Edward, MP Suhasini Ali and cricketer Ravi Shastri are among the celebrities slated to attend the Maheshwar wedding. While the Edwards are already camping in the temple town the others are expected to arrive later this evening.
The US connection
SABRINA HOLKAR is the fourth successive generation of the Holkar family to marry an American. Her great-grandfather Tukoji Rao III married an American woman who later took the name Sharmishtha Devi, while his son Yeshwantrao tied the knot with Ms Fey, also a US citizen. Richard Holkar, Sabrina’s father, too, entered into a marital alliance with an American woman called Shelly, who later took the name Shalini Devi.
