The Regional Office of Directorate of Environment organised a seminar on ‘Deserts and desertification’ to mark the day here in Hukulganj area.
Faculty member of the Botany Department in the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Prof AS Raghuvanshi expressed concern over the rapid increase in deserts across the world. “Around 2. 86 lakh square kilometres area of India has become desert,” he said, adding 91 per cent area of Rajasthan and 93 per cent area of Gujarat was desert at present.
He said the need of the hour was to check desertification as there was no technology to revert desert into fertile land. “Setting up of green belts, wind breaks, sand stabilisation and an effective check on soil erosion were among other tools to check desertification,” he added.
Prof BRD Gupta and Prof GC Chaudhary of the BHU stressed the need for public awareness in this regard. Technical assistant of the directorate, Subran Kumar welcomed the guests whereas Virendra Kumar proposed a vote of thanks.
Students of the BHU and Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth under the banner of Green India Society took out a cycle rally to generate awareness among a cross-section of society from Varanasi to Vindhyachal Temple in Mirzapur.
Hemant Yadav, student of the Social Science faculty in BHU led the rally.
