Microsoft chief Bill Gates began his four-day India visit on Tuesday with an early morning meeting with Communications and IT Minister Dayanidhi Maran at his residence.

During the 20-minute meeting, the minister and the world's richest man discussed progress on the various areas of cooperation identified during Maran's visit to Seattle in September this year.

Gates and Maran will meet again on Thursday to chalk out other measures of cooperation to create a more enabling environment for adoption of IT to promote e-governance and literacy programmes across the country.

On his fourth visit to India, Gates, who is accompanied by wife Melinda, will be reviewing the progress of his $200 million HIV/AIDS initiative in the country and also meet key Microsoft clients and senior officials.

At least half his visit would be devoted to the review of the AIDS initiative, meeting some patients benefiting from the scheme and interacting with officials on various issues, official sources said.

He will also travel to Chennai after attending the third meeting of the Global Alliance For Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI) being held on Wednesday.
