Gemini honoured with a stamp

A Rs 5 postage stamp on Tamil cinema's evergreen hero Gemini Ganesan has been released.

Union Communication and Information Technology Minister Dayanidhi Maran on Saturday released a commemorative postage stamp on Gemini Ganesan, the evergreen romantic hero of Tamil cinema.

The stamp, in the denomination of Rs 5, was received by the yesteryear actor's daughters Kamala Selvaraj, a renowned gynaecologist, and Revathi Swaminathan at a simple function in Chennai.

Born on November 17, 1920, in Pudukottai, Gemini Ganesan began his film career with Miss Malini in 1947. Hit films such as Penn, Kanavan Kankanda Deivam and Missiamma gave him a star status.

Gemini had acted in lead roles in over 200 films in all the southern languages and Hindi.

He was honoured with several awards and titles, including the Padmashree, Nadippu Chelvam and Nadigar Mannan.

Eminent film personalities and family members and fans of the actor participated in the function.

The stamps, first day covers and information brochures would be available at all philatelic bureaux and philatelic counters.
