Germans play as a team: PT Usha
"For me, after athletics, it is soccer," says Udan Padi. What is your first passion?Updated: May 13, 2006 01:24 IST
In football-crazy Kerala, nobody can miss out on the World Cup fever. And for me, after athletics, it’s soccer.
I have been following the previous five or six World Cups on television. This year, too, it’s going to be a television spectacle for me.
I am going to cheer the Germans as they always play as a team and not as individuals. Former German coach Rudi Voller had said in 1998 that they are preparing for 2006. Eight years is a long time to prepare and I hope they do well.
Another team I would like to see in the final is Brazil. If Brazil and Germany meet again, it would not be just revenge time for Germany but also a fight between two contrasting teams.
While Germany are known for their collective spirit, Brazil depends a lot on their star players like Ronaldinho to perform. It would be exciting to see a repeat of the 2002 World Cup final.
I have two or three favourite players. I like Ronaldinho, Messi and Raul for their total devotion to the game.
Very rarely have these three been involved in controversies both on and off the field. They have total dedication for the sport. That’s how a sportsman should be. I also love watching Ronaldo’s penalty kicks.
One of the most dramatic moments was when Germany lost the final against Brazil in the last World Cup. As a team, Germany were very strong. Yet, Ronaldo’s brilliance got the better of them and they lost 2-0.
This time, I hope my team will win.
