“All this and much more is coming up. We have a number of things planned up for Doordarshan, some of the plans are long term while some are short term and we are implementing them as and when possible,” said director general of Doordarshan Navin Kumar, who was in Lucknow to inaugurate the programme under its series ‘Katha Sarita’.
Talking about the digitalisation plan, he said, “There is a revolution in broadcast technology and we are trying to keep pace with this trend. What we are looking forward to is digitalisation of Doordarshan. By the 2010, Doordarshan Delhi will go digital and by 2011, metros and emerging metros will follow suit. Finally, after assessing its progress and success, other Doordarshan Networks will be digitalised too. This will ensure better transmission and quality.”
Doordarshan is, however, going to modernise only its looks and not its basic content. “Doordarshan basically caters to the masses and not to any particular section of the society. So, our basic content is going to be more or less the same so that the masses could relate to it.”
Another step towards upgradation and consumer services is to provide viewers the pleasure of watching Doordarshan on their mobile phones. “We will provide our viewers the facility to watch two channels, DD News and DD Sports, on their mobile phones by next year. We will be the first to take the step,” said Navin Kumar.
By middle of next year, music lovers will be able to hear some rare musical concerts online. “Doordarshan owns some of the rarest music recordings of maestros like Bhimsen Joshi and Bismillah Khan. What we are doing now is providing them to the viewers online where they can watch the video by paying a nominal sum,” he said.
