Girish Kasarvalli is one of the finest filmmakers India has produced. He is known for his humanist tradition of subjects that tackle global themes in a local context.

Always using his mother tongue Kannada as the language for his films, Kasarvalli has turned out several masterpeices such as Ghattashraddha (1978), Tabarna Katha (1987), Thai Saheb (1997) and Dweepa (2002) which won for the Golden Lotus – India's highest film award given away by the President of the country.

His other films Bannada Visha, Mane, Krourya and Mooru Darigalu also deal with social issues in a sensitive manner. A graduate from the presitigious Film and Television Institute in Pune, Kasarvalli was adjudged the best student of the 1975 batch and also won the Best Student Film Award for his diploma film, Avashesh.
