SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD Sheetal, who had been set afire yesterday by her boyfriend and second cousin Vikas in the vacant house at Kanjar Mohalla (Biyabani) where they met clandestinely during the past six months, succumbed to her burns at the MY Hospital late last night. Meanwhile, police have managed to nab Vikas, who has been accused of the heinous crime.

The house where they met secretly belonged to Dhanwantari Bai, a relative of Sheetal. Though the front door of the house was locked, one of the rear windows was open and they used it as entry and exit.

Police said that though Vikas was having an affair with Sheetal for the past six months, he had got engaged a few days back and wanted to break all connection with Sheetal. Sheetal was insisting that since she was carrying his child, he should marry her, and Vikas had been giving her false assurances. When Sheetal heard about Vikas’s engagement, things came to a head and the latter decided to kill her.

He hid a can of kerosene in the house, and when Sheetal came he doused her in kerosene, set her on fire and fled. A stunned Sheetal lost her presence of mind, else she, too, could have escaped through the open window.

However, she screamed for help. At first the people of the area could not understand from where the screams were coming, and thought it was some ghost. But when they saw smoke coming out of the empty house, they broke open the front door, not knowing that the rear window was open. They lost precious moments and by that time, Sheetal had suffered 100 per cent burns.

Police said after setting Sheetal on fire, Vikas went to his own house. He did not come to help when people took Sheetal to the hospital. At the hospital Sheetal told the treating doctor that Vikas had set her on fire and her statement to the doctor is being considered as the dying declaration, as she lost consciousness before that could be recorded.

Both families are very poor. Sheetal, who has studied till class three, is the second of five daughters and a son (who is mentally disturbed).

Her father Raju sells plastic items, and her mother exchanges secondhand clothes for utensils. The family lives in a small nine by five room where they had difficulty in squeezing in every night.

Vikas’s condition is no better. He himself has studied till class seven and worked as a spray painter and he too lives in a small single- room house with his two other brothers and sisters and parents.
