Singh said at present the municipal corporation had given the sanitation work of various wards to private agencies and was spending Rs 2.92 crore. If the assignment system was introduced, the total expenditure would come down to around Rs 2.55 crore and the corporation would save Rs 37 lakh per annum, he said. However, he said municipal corporation officials were trying to sabotage the proposal for vested interests.

Singh said earlier the corporation used to give the sanitation work of outer wards on contract but this time they allotted the sanitation work of Civil Lines and posh areas too on contract, increasing the expenditure of Rs 14 lakh per month. Singh said that in a meeting on June 15 it was proposed to start recruitment from June 21 but the proposal remained confined to file.

Responding to a question, Singh said there were 773 approved posts for sanitation employees against which 600 employees were already working. He revealed that the corporation had planned to recruit 953 sanitation employees on assignment basis which had generated a ray of hope among the employees.

However, now the employees were feeling cheated after the programme was dropped.

Singh said there were 283 casual employees in the municipal corporation and there was a is proposal to regularise the services of 10 per cent sanitation employees after every three years but the proposal was dropped the officials had blocked the channel for regularising the services of the employees.

Meanwhile, talking to Hindustan Times, municipal commissioner Shivkant Ojha said he was going through the files and he would take appropriate decision within a week.

The employees union also handed over a memorandum to Urban Development Minister Mohd Azam Khan on July 30 on his arrival here to participate in a felicitation programme.
