Goa NRI Commissioner Eduardo Faleiro told reporters on Saturday that the Commission had to initiate the data base exercise considering the number of complaints against these agents.

"There are several cases of people being sent abroad on fake documents after charging huge money. Many a times, these gullible candidates are trapped abroad forcing the missions there to rescue them," Faleiro said.

Many such agents have already been charge sheeted in various courts. In all, 184 criminal cases were filed by the aggrieved complainants of which 17 have resulted in the convictions, he informed.

The former union minister also said that lax police probe result in acquittal and low conviction rates in many cases.

He said the Commission will set up a Committee which will work for protection of emigrants and deal with unscrupulous recruiting agents.

"The Committee would along with police authorities gather intelligence and create a database of such fraudulent travel agents, recruiting agents and intermediaries who indulge in irregular migration," Faleiro said.

NRI Commission has also decided to launch a campaign to inform the general public about the risks of unregistered migrants.
