Standard gold (99.5 purity) started the day on a new life-time high of Rs 8,150, showing a steep rise of Rs 80 over Monday's close of Rs 8,070.

Similarly, pure gold (99.9 purity) also opened on a historic high of Rs 8190 on heavy buying.

The previous record high for standard gold was Rs 8100 and for pure gold it was Rs 8145 both recorded on December 21, 2005.

Attributing the historic rise to firm global advices, dealers said the metal shot up at the New York Mercantile Exchange on Monday on strong buying in Tokyo and was quoted at $566.75 per ounce as against the previous level of $562.45.
