He was speaking as chief guest at the fourth Mata Gujri award function held under the aegis of Mata Gujri Foundation at the college of the same name at Pipliyapala, AB Road, on Saturday. Past three recipients of the award, along with this year’s recipient, educationist Dr Charanjeet Kaur from Bhopal were present.

Jakhar said that there was much to learn from the lives of great persons and incorporating the values they stood for in life had the potential of changing one for the better. ‘‘Traditional form of education had not lost its relevance, but it was facing continuous and ever-increasing assault by foreign mediums like television, which corrupted young and impressionable minds.

Educationists, therefore, have dual responsibility of not only making their ward techno savvy and ready to compete in this globalised world, but also adhere to tradition and cultural values.’’

Jakhar said that as Chancellor of Universities he kept getting complaints against fictitious colleges, mostly B Ed and Medical, of having duped students of their money. He said that he wanted the

Vice-Chancellors of universities to put a stop to such malpractices. Saying that he had high expectations from Devi Ahilya Vishwa Vidyalaya (DAVV), with Vice Chancellor C S Chaddha being a former bureaucrat, and hoped such and other complaints would not come from this quarter.

Guest of honour Lieutenant General (retired) Sher Amir Singh said that the Foundation deserved praise for constituting an award named on a great woman for women excelling in various fields, as it served as inspiration for all. Chaddha said that crime against women was on the rise even in societies known for the respect shown towards their womenfolk. He stressed that education would have to be imparted in a manner that strengthens the roots of the student.

Award recipient Charanjeet Kaur gave her speech in Punjabi, after which the Governor also spoke in Punjabi. She thanked her parents and well-wishers and asked for strength from God to become able and worthy of the honour bestowed upon her.

The first recipient of the award Ravinder Kaur Kalsi gave information about the award. The second and third recipients Mahendra Kaur Kathpal and Dr Savita Inamdar welcomed the chief guest. Foundation president Preetam Singh Chhabra delivered the welcome address, T S Chhatwal read out the citation and Dr R S Makhija coordinated the programme that ended with a cultural presentation.
