Gritty Afiq fails to knock Austrian Auer off the top
Even winning ten of the final 12 races of the inaugural JK Racing Asia Series was ultimately not enough for Malaysia's Afiq Ikhwan Yazid from stopping Austria's Lucas Auer from winning the title by a margin of seven points.
Even winning ten of the final 12 races of the inaugural JK Racing Asia Series was ultimately not enough for Malaysia's Afiq Ikhwan Yazid from stopping Austria's Lucas Auer from winning the title by a margin of seven points.
While Auer had no answer to Yazid's clean sweep of the final four races at the Sepang International Circuit on Sunday, the 17-year-old was able to to do just enough to protect the 32 point lead over Yazid that he carried coming into the final round of the season.
A poor qualifying session that saw the Austrian line up fourth on the starting grid did have him a little bit rattled, however.
With the exception of the opening race, the top three drivers in the points standings occupied the podium positions with Malaysia's Nabil Jeffri taking a second place and two third places.
Raj Bharath, the sole Indian driver in the field had a fairly forgettable weekend finishing in the second to last place amongst the classified drivers in all four races and breaking into the top 10 in only the final race of the day.
2011 Points standings:
1) Lucas Auer (AUT): 292
2) Afiq Ikhwan Yazid (MAL): 285
3) Nabil Jeffri (MAL): 186
