The Yogashema Sabha, the apex body of priests and Brahmin bodies, on Monday criticized the Guruvayoor temple officials for misleading the high priest (tantri) of the temple. “Soon after Union Minister Vayalar Ravi’s son entered the temple, they informed the tantri the temple was defiled by the entry of a non-Hindu. The tantri only took the best available option to him,” the Sabha said in Alapuzha, justifying the purification rite.

However, the Sabha reiterated its demand that the temple doors be open to all believers and decided to work for a consensus.

The famous temple had performed a punyaham (purification rite) on May 19 after the Overseas Affairs Minister’s family had entered it to make an offering. The tantri had ordered the cleansing rite after Ravi’s son Ravi Krishna had failed to produce a certificate proving his religious status to temple authorities. Ravi’s wife Mercy Ravi is a Christian by birth.
